If you’ve ever found yourself clenching your jaw at the end of a long day or woken up knowing you’ve been grinding your teeth through the night, you’re not alone.
But what if I told you that this tension isn’t just held in your face and jaw —it’s held in your breath and consequently the whole body too? 😬
The jaw and breath are deeply connected, and when we learn to release one, the other follows. I’ve been really getting into studying this at greater depth recently, and I’m loving what I’m discovering. 🧐
Rebecca Dennis, who I’ve been working with recently and who is the brilliant mind behind The Breathing Tree, says this…
“The breath is the bridge linking our mind and body. The practice of deep breathing helps to stimulate our parasympathetic nervous system, bringing us to a calm state.”
She encourages us to massage the masseter muscle—the powerhouse of the jaw. If you trace your fingers down from your ears, you’ll find it: a place where we unconsciously store stress, gripping tightly without even realising it.
Try a gentle massage right at the masseter, pressing softly between your teeth. As you release tension there, notice what happens to your breath. A deep sigh? A fuller inhale? `Notice this simple magic of the release you can find in the jaw – breath connection. 💆🏻♀️
Enjoy taking it with you as a little moment of release and ease in a stressful world – I certainly will be!
